Skills Matter - X Matters Series - Developer Events - Leadership Matters with Dylan Beattie

Tuesday 15 January 2019, 19:30 - 20:30

10 South Place, London, Reino Unido

At this month's Leadership Matters, we're excited to be joined by Dylan Beattie who will be discussing the role that leadership plays in modern software development! -------------------------------------------- Culture, Code and Karaoke : Analogue Leadership in a Digital Age Leaders. Experts. Managers. Mentors. Analysts. Seniors, architects, product owners, tech leads, founders, executives... In the wonderful world of modern software development, we’re spoilt for choice when it comes to job titles. And when seasoned professionals with decades of invaluable experience are proudly calling themselves ‘Software Developer’ whilst the kid across the street hands out business cards with ‘CTO and Digital Prophet’ printed on them, it’s no wonder we struggle to keep track of who’s supposed to do what. But we humans are all different. The best teams are often groups of weird and wonderful people who transcend their job titles in all sorts of unexpected ways - and the difference between management, leadership and mentoring is all about how we embrace those differences. No matter what you’re working on, or what sort of team you’re working with, there’s three questions that underlie the decisions we have to make at every stage of the process. What are we doing next? What can I expect from my team? What can my team expect from me? Join Dylan Beattie for an engaging and offbeat session that explores the complex and often misunderstood role that leadership plays in modern software development. Dylan will share stories from his own career journey, from Computer Assistant to Chief Technology Officer, as well as examples and insights from fields ranging from space exploration to rock’n’roll music. What’s the difference between experience and expertise? What does seniority really mean in an industry that’s constantly redefining itself? And what does all this have to do with karaoke? --------------------------------------------- About the Speaker:Dylan Beattie Dylan Beattie is a systems architect, developer, and Microsoft MVP, who has built everything from tiny standalone websites to large-scale distributed systems. He created his first web page in 1992, and he's been building data-driven interactive web applications since the days of Windows NT 4. He's currently the CTO at Skills Matter in London, where he juggles his time between working on their software platform and supporting their conference and community teams. From 2003 to 2018, Dylan worked as webmaster, then IT Manager, and then systems architect at Spotlight (www.spotlight.com), where his first-hand experience of watching an organisation and its codebase evolve over more than a decade provided him with a unique insight into how everything from web standards and API design to Conway's Law and recruitment ends up influencing a company’s code and culture. ------------------------------------------------- FREE TICKETS Attendance is free for registered delegates, and you can register here: https://skillsmatter.com/meetups/11778-leadership-matters-with-dylan-beattie WHAT, WHEN, WHERE WHAT: Leadership Matters with Dylan Beattie- Culture, Code and Karaoke: Analogue Leadership in a Digital Age WHEN: Tuesday 15th January WHERE: Skills Matter, CodeNode REGISTRATION(FREE): https://skillsmatter.com/meetups/11778-leadership-matters-with-dylan-beattie
