London Python - "So you want to be a manager" + "Async web servers" + Farfetch Data Science

Wednesday 29 May 2019, 20:00 - 21:00

211 Old St, London, Reino Unido

This month's meetup will be kindly hosted by Farfetch on their Old Street offices. The confirmed talks are: - "So you want to be a manager" by Gil Goncalves "This talk will be about helping people understand what the job of a manager is, make a decision on whether they should be managers, and that there are more ways to advance than just to become a manager. This talk is aimed at developers of all levels, but this will be more interesting to those who are considering making a career change/are being promoted into a manager role or those who may look into becoming a manager in the future. Many developers will eventually make the choice of becoming a manager, the goal of this talk to help them make that decision." - "Async web servers; design and implementation" with Phil Jones "In this talk I'll describe an idealised process I've gone through developing Hypercorn (https://gitlab.com/pgjones/hypercorn). I'll define the aims of a modern async web server, overview the tooling used to be async, and finally the constraints imposed by the event loop choice." Phil is a software engineer living in London, previously a particle physicist working on the SNO+ experiment. He completed his DPhil at Oxford (Lincoln College) in 2011, then worked as a postdoc at QMUL before switching to industry. He's now Head of Engineering at Octopus Wealth, having previously been VP Engineering at Smarkets. He primarily contributes to open source in Python on projects related to web development specifically the HTTP stack. At work he writes Python, Typescript, and Terraform, mostly managing the tech effort. More info at https://pgjones.dev - We will also have an extra talk by a member of the Data Science team at Farfetch. Final schedule to be determined. If anyone is interested in making announcements or lightning talks please contact one of the organizers.
