Lisbon Open Data Meetup - Special Edition: Data Science for early disease detection + Data Munging Tools

Wednesday 11 May 2016, 20:00 - 21:00

Rua da Prata, 80, Lisbon, Portugal

We have a special guest coming from London to share his practical data science experience with us. 1) Frank Kelly - Early-stage disease detection using data science Alzheimer's disease is a form of dementia that affects over 44 million people globally. Unfortunately the condition is very hard to detect in its early stages. It is usually diagnosed by a simple questionnaire test, an approach that can only detect Alzheimer's disease many years after its onset. The challenge set in this project was earlier detection using Python and data science. A fuller description is available here:http://pydata.org/london2016/schedule/presentation/26/ About the speaker: Frank is a data scientist, currently working at an Angel-backed startup where he is focused on the applications of graph analytics and various types of clustering. Cambridge-educated and formally trained as an Electrical Engineer, Frank has extensive heavy industry experience as well as a background as a former tech startup co-founder. He has knowledge in the areas of time series analysis and signal processing with Bayesian inference. He is motivated by the prospect of using data science in a potentially high impact project in a field that affects so many lives globally. 2) Sam Hopkins - What python libraries to use to manipulate your large data Given the real-world data manipulation needs of CrowdProcess, see how we are going about selecting our mission-critical software infrastructure based upon performance. We are currently looking at node.js, pandas, and SFrame.  About the speaker: Sam Hopkins is one of our regular speakers, a CTO and a passionate software engineer.  Looking forward to seeing you there!  ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Important notice: There have been a number of people who have RSVP'd positively, and have repeatedly either cancelled last second or not shown up. This has lead to people who could have shown up being turned away.  To avoid this, we shall from now on be implementing a new policy by which cancellations must occur at least 24 hours before the event. Anyone who reserves a place and does not use it will unfortunately have to be turned down from later events.  While we understand that sometimes "life just happens", we must do our best to guarantee that those who are interested get a seat. We are organizing this for free and on our own time, and want to make sure that everyone has the chance to participate. Therefore, please reserve seats responsively, and if you think you might not make it, cancel with enough time to let someone else get the place.
