Forward. - Scale-ups: go big or go home

Thursday 29 November 2018, 19:30 - 20:30

Calle de Pradillo, 42, 28002, Madrid, España

REMEMBER you need to register and get your free ticket at https://forward-scale-ups.eventbrite.es--------In this third edition of Forward we will talk about real problems related with scalability and durability in production applications. *Talk: Until the end of Internet*Rosa Gutierrez, from Basecamp, will talk about how constant change and impermanence seem to be inherent features of so much software and so many Internet services these days. We trust our data and workflows to services that might be taken down or "sunset" at any time because of acquisitions, bankruptcy or change of priorities. We've come to assume this risk as normal, but it doesn't have to be like that. At Basecamp, we are committed to keep our products running and available to customers until the End of the Internet, but that doesn't come for free! We have to deal with legacy code bases, security, infrastructure changes and other challenges that come with supporting > 12 years old apps. We'll look at why and how we manage all this in Basecamp and how this policy influences the way we write software, from the big picture to the tiny, every day decisions. *Talk: Surviving the free ~load test~ day*Alberto Gragera, from Cabify Engineering Team, will share Cabify's experience on September 26th, when rides were free for from 10:00 to 22:00. Even though they tried to prepare theirselves during the previous weeks, they had a lot of problems and learned a lot during the (painful) process. This talk will go through the chain of events, what went well and what went wrong and what they have learned for the next free ~load test~ day.
